Pivotal“Maxi Araújo's goal right on the stroke of half-time was the knockout blow — a third goal before the interval that rendered the second half a formality and shattered any hope Vitória had of a comeback.”
Pivotal“Substitute Luís Guilherme, introduced at half-time, capped a fine cameo by adding Sporting's fifth to complete the humiliation — a fitting finish to a comprehensive team performance.”
“Zeno Debast's unfortunate own goal gave Vitória a hollow consolation at 5-1, the Sporting defender inadvertently diverting the ball into his own net in the closing stages of an already-decided contest.”
Outstanding performance

Sporting CP put on a masterclass of clinical finishing to dismantle Vitória Guimarães 5-1 at home, with the result largely settled within the first 45 minutes. Gonçalo Inácio broke the deadlock in the 9th minute and Daniel Bragança doubled the lead by the 23rd, before Maxi Araújo's third on the stroke of half-time extinguished any lingering hope for the visitors. Despite the possession and shots being relatively even on paper — Sporting with 52% possession against Vitória's 48%, and 14 shots to 13 — the gulf in quality was starkly illustrated by big chances created: nine for Sporting compared to just one for Guimarães. The second half continued in the same vein, with Luis Suárez making it 4-0 on 61 minutes before substitute Luís Guilherme added a fifth to complete the rout, a consolation own goal from Zeno Debast giving Vitória nothing but a footnote. For Sporting, this emphatic victory reinforces their title credentials and form heading into the final stretch of the Liga Portugal season, while Vitória, despite generating 52 dangerous attacks, were fatally undermined by a woeful lack of cutting edge in front of goal.
How entertaining was this match?
Sporting CP host Vitória Guimarães at Estádio José Alvalade on Monday night, with the Lions desperate to keep pace in the title race while sitting seven points behind leaders Porto. Vitória arrive in decent form — unbeaten in their last four league outings — making this a trickier assignment than the standings suggest for Rúben Amorim's men.
