Sporting KC could not have dreamed of a better start, with André Luiz scoring twice inside ten minutes before Wyatt Meyer added a third by the 16th minute to put the game seemingly out of reach. But Philadelphia, despite trailing 3-0 at the interval, dominated the underlying numbers with 55% possession and 70 dangerous attacks to KC's 44, and that pressure eventually told. Bruno Damiani, Cavan Sullivan and Milan Iloski scored three goals in the space of just four minutes between the 64th and 68th minute to level the score, before Zorhan Bassong turned into his own net in the 73rd minute to complete an astonishing collapse for the hosts. Sporting KC's clinical finishing in the first half - six shots on target from ten attempts - simply could not be sustained as Philadelphia's superior passing accuracy (83% to 79%) and territorial control eventually overwhelmed a Sporting KC side that will now face serious questions about how they surrendered a three-goal cushion at home.
