PivotalOutstanding performance

Vancouver dominated the ball with 63% possession and out-passed DC United by nearly 240 attempts, but their defensive fragility let them down time and again against a DC side content to soak up pressure and strike on the counter. The Whitecaps twice took the lead - through Brian White and then Bruno Caicedo right on the stroke of halftime - only for DC to claw back each time, first through Lucas Bartlett and finally through Nono's second of the night in the 80th minute. Thomas Müller's driving finish in the 72nd minute looked to have won it for Vancouver, capping a spell where Ryan Gauld's introduction had injected fresh energy into the hosts' attack, but DC's staying power proved too much. For DC United, stealing a point on the road despite being outshot and dominated territorially will feel like a triumph of resilience, while Vancouver will rue a night where their control of the game never translated into control of the scoreline.
