Outstanding performance

San Jose needed almost nothing to punish Portland - just 13 shots to Portland's 18 - but their efficiency in front of goal decided this one early. Preston Judd struck inside four minutes and again just before the half-hour mark, sandwiching an Eduard Löwen finish to put the Earthquakes 3-0 up by the 29th minute. Portland dominated the underlying numbers, out-possessing San Jose 54-46%, out-passing them 542-457, and racking up 71 dangerous attacks to San Jose's 25, yet had nothing to show for it until David Da Costa pulled one back late through substitute-fueled pressure. The result masks a strange stat line where the losing side controlled the game for long spells, but San Jose's early ruthlessness meant Portland were always chasing shadows, and this loss will sting given how much of the ball they actually had.
How entertaining was this match?
San Jose, sitting fifth in the West and unbeaten in five, host a Portland side clinging to the final playoff spot after a costly home loss to Atlanta United. The Earthquakes have never swept the Timbers in a season series — a win here would make history.
