Outstanding performance

Independiente Rivadavia produced a commanding second-half performance to sweep aside Mendoza rivals Gimnasia y Esgrima 5-1, though they had to rally after being stunned by a Blas Armoa header inside the opening minute. The equalizer came via a corner routine in the 18th minute — Sheyko Studer heading home — and from that point Rivadavia began to impose their superior quality, finishing the match with 59% possession, 24 shots and a dominant 73-36 control rating. The match turned decisively on the hour mark when Franco Saavedra was dismissed for violent conduct, reducing Gimnasia to ten men and opening the floodgates: Fabrizio Sartori had already restored the lead with a clinical long-range effort on 50 minutes, but Álex Arce, Leonard Costa and substitute Leonel Bucca — who scored within a minute of coming on — piled on to complete the rout. The victory carries significant weight in the title race context, with Rivadavia's fluid attacking play and relentless set-piece threat proving far too much for a Gimnasia side that contributed to their own downfall through poor discipline and defensive errors in the final half hour.
