River Plate looked in complete control after a commanding first half that saw Ángel Correa open the scoring with a well-worked move from a Lucas Martínez Quarta assist, before an unfortunate own goal from Thiago Silvero — following pressure from Joaquín Freitas — doubled their lead just before the break. With 56% possession and 36 dangerous attacks to Vélez's 21, River were dominant on the ball, though their finishing was far from clinical, managing just three shots on target from twelve attempts. The second half told a different story entirely. Vélez coach turned to his bench immediately, and substitute Diego Valdés made an instant impact, pulling one back just three minutes after coming on courtesy of a Matías Pellegrini assist. With Vélez creating three big chances to River's none, the momentum had completely shifted, and Manuel Lanzini confirmed the comeback in the 79th minute to earn a hard-fought point. The draw will feel like a missed opportunity for River, who were 20 minutes from three points, while for Vélez it represents a resilient response that speaks to their fighting character — and a point rescued with time almost up.
