Young Boys raced into a 2-0 lead inside 14 minutes through Joel Monteiro and Samuel Essende, dominating the early exchanges and looking set for a comfortable home win. But Basel refused to fold, hitting back through Kazeem Olaigbe and Asane Sow to level at 2-2 by the 37th minute, before Alvyn Sanches restored Young Boys' lead right on the stroke of halftime. The second half was a different story entirely - after a frantic first 45 minutes produced five goals and multiple bookings, the game calmed considerably until Akpe Victory struck in the 71st minute to complete Basel's fightback and snatch a point. Young Boys will feel they should have won this given their statistical dominance - 21 shots to 12, nine on target compared to Basel's four, and 67 to 48 in overall control - but wasteful finishing and a leaky defense allowed Basel back in twice.
How entertaining was this match?
Young Boys welcome Basel to the Stadion Wankdorf in Bern for a blockbuster Super League clash between two of Switzerland's biggest clubs. With YB sitting top on 10 points and Basel just one point behind in third, Saturday's match could be an early statement in what already looks like a fascinating title race. Add in a historic rivalry and a squad disrupted by injuries and departures, and this is must-watch Swiss football.
