Outstanding performance

Brighton controlled this from the first whistle, dominating possession at 66% and carving out four big chances while Coventry managed just one. Kostoulas broke the deadlock in the 35th minute after Coventry had actually threatened moments earlier through Onyeka and Thomas, but Brighton's quality told and Yalcouyé doubled the lead early in the second half. The game turned decisively when Awoniyi was sent off for violent conduct in the 53rd minute, leaving Coventry to play out the remaining 37 minutes a man down against a Brighton side full of confidence. From there it became a formality - Groß converted a penalty won by Kostoulas, and Lewis Dunk added a fifth from outside the box in the 83rd minute. For Coventry, this is a damaging result that exposes their vulnerability against top-tier opposition, while Brighton's ruthless efficiency in front of goal (five from just 15 shots) will serve as a statement to the rest of the league.
