Charleroi dominated the opening half hour, racing into a 2-0 lead through Freddy Mbemba and Aurélien Scheidler before Dante Vanzeir's fast-break finish gave Cercle Brugge hope going into the break. The hosts controlled proceedings throughout, finishing with 64% possession and 14 shots to Cercle's 7, and their control translated into a third goal when Scheidler converted a penalty just after the hour mark. But Cercle Brugge refused to fold, winning their own penalty moments later through Viggo Martens' involvement and converting via Steve Ngoura to make it 3-2 with almost twenty minutes still to play. Despite Cercle's spirited response and a heavy tackle count (17 to Charleroi's 8) suggesting a scrappier, more physical approach to claw back into the game, Charleroi's first-half efficiency proved enough to see out the win, with four late yellow cards capping a tense finish.
