Did it deliver?
This match did not deliver on its billing. Burnley created chances, but a goalless draw with only one important first-half moment and nothing after the break made for a flat spectacle.
Burnley had 18 shots to Portsmouth's five and won the dominance battle 67-43, yet they could not break down a Portsmouth side that defended in numbers. Only four of those efforts were on target, and Portsmouth got none on target. Portsmouth's 13 tackles to Burnley's 10 reflected a compact, spoiling approach that kept the game scrappy. The one big chance Burnley created was missed, and that was the closest either side came to a goal. The game was fractious around the half-hour mark, with Josh Laurent and Jayden Meghoma booked for arguing at 39′, and Portsmouth manager John Mousinho was booked for dissent at 64′. Substitutions from the 46th minute onward brought little spark, with the second half producing no important moments at all. Burnley will see this as two points dropped given their territorial edge. Portsmouth will take the point and the clean sheet, helped by four saves from their goalkeeper.
