Outstanding performance

Birmingham City made the most of their only real opening, winning a penalty in the 41st minute after Carlos Vicente's earlier effort had been saved from a corner, and August Priske Flyger made no mistake from the spot. West Brom actually edged possession and passing accuracy, but Birmingham were sharper in the key areas that mattered, out-shooting the hosts on target seven to two and creating the game's biggest chances. The Baggies pushed hard after the break, making wholesale changes from the 55th minute onwards in search of an equaliser, but their final ball let them down time and again, with only two shots on target all game despite 14 attempts in total. The result continues to complicate West Brom's season while giving Birmingham a timely boost in a fixture dripping with rivalry and bragging rights.
