Middlesbrough raced into a three-goal cushion inside 36 minutes, with Sebastian Berhalter's brace either side of Amario Cozier-Duberry's strike putting the game seemingly out of Norwich's reach after Mohamed Touré's opener had given the visitors an early shock lead. But Norwich, hardly a footnote despite trailing by two goals for most of the second half, roared back through substitutes Jovon Makama and Jacob Wright to level at 3-3 by the 75th minute, turning a routine home win into a genuine scrap. Just when a share of the spoils looked likely, Ashley Phillips - only minutes after picking up a yellow card - popped up with the decisive goal in the 90th minute to snatch it for Middlesbrough. The stats told of a tight contest overall, with Middlesbrough's extra cutting edge (17 shots, 6 on target, 5 big chances created) just enough to outlast a Norwich side that matched them for possession and created enough to have taken something from the game.
