Panathinaikos rode out a nervy finish to advance from Sofia, but they had to do it the hard way. Levi García gave the Greek side a lead just before the hour mark that looked sufficient, only for CSKA 1948 to find a lifeline through Lasha Dvali three minutes from time — a leveller that sent the tie into extra time and momentarily swung the tie's aggregate picture back toward the Bulgarian hosts. Panathinaikos had been the better side across both halves by the numbers — 21 shots to 14, 11 on target to five, and more dangerous attacks — but CSKA's nine saves from their goalkeeper kept the scoreline deceptively close. It was substitute Cyriel Dessers, one of several attacking changes made by Panathinaikos in the second half, who ended the contest with a composed finish from a corner in the 94th minute of extra time, rewarding his side's persistence and ultimately their superior quality over the course of the two-legged tie.
