PivotalOutstanding performance

Independiente del Valle controlled this first leg from start to finish, racking up 18 shots, 63% possession and a staggering 56 dangerous attacks compared to Flamengo's 15, but they had nothing to show for it. Flamengo, playing largely on the counter and from set pieces, needed just two moments of quality to take control of the tie - Bruno Henrique poking home a loose ball in the box after a save from Júnior Sornoza, then Léo Pereira heading home from a corner won moments after a Gonzalo Plata effort was blocked. The hosts created enough with ten corners and 17 tackles to suggest they were the better side on the night, but wastefulness in front of goal - just three shots on target from 18 attempts - proved costly. Flamengo now travel back to Rio with a two-goal cushion and, crucially, no away goals conceded, putting them firmly in the driving seat ahead of the second leg despite being second-best for long stretches in Quito.
