“Sam Burns completes his hat-trick in the closing minutes, capping off a five-goal rout for Lower Breck.”
Lower Breck were ruthless from start to finish, with Luke Gill setting the tone by scoring twice before half-time to put the tie beyond doubt early. Sam Burns then took over in the second half, adding three goals of his own either side of a brief Thornaby rally sparked by Joe Pickett's consolation strike. Thornaby's response was fleeting, they never threatened to build on their 67th-minute goal as Lower Breck simply reasserted control and finished with a flourish through Burns' 89th-minute strike. This was a statement cup performance for Lower Breck, whose sitting at position 2 and strong recent form were fully on display, while Thornaby will need to regroup quickly having been given a harsh lesson in game management.
