3 – 1
“Mathew Warburton breaks the deadlock, giving the home side an early lead they would build on.”
Pivotal“Tejan Thomas doubles the lead, putting Rushden firmly in control of the tie before the half-hour mark.”
Pivotal“Lewis Green gives Peterborough Sports a lifeline right before half-time, cutting the deficit to 2-1.”
AFC Rushden & Diamonds did the bulk of their damage in a lively opening 45 minutes, striking twice through Mathew Warburton and Tejan Thomas to build a commanding 2-0 cushion before the break. Peterborough Sports, to their credit, refused to fold and got themselves back into the tie right on the stroke of half-time when Lewis Green pulled one back, giving the visitors something to build on. That goal, however, proved to be as close as Peterborough Sports would get, with the second half yielding little in the way of further drama as Rushden's early platform held firm. The result keeps Rushden's cup ambitions alive and continues a run of home form that will please a team sitting third in their league, while Peterborough Sports will rue a slow start that ultimately cost them the tie.
