Spennymoor Town produced one of the most ruthless firsts halves of the season, turning three corners into three goals inside 34 minutes through a rampant Danny Johnson. Chester actually controlled the game for long spells - 60% possession, 42 dangerous attacks to 25, and seven corners to Spennymoor's two - but none of that territorial dominance showed on the scoreboard. Glen Taylor added a second in between Johnson's brace either side, and when Johnson completed his treble three minutes after the restart it was already game over, Billy Waters' reply two minutes later little more than a consolation. The result is a damaging one for Chester, who will have to reflect on wasteful finishing and defensive naivety from set pieces despite matching Spennymoor shot for shot, while Spennymoor's clinical edge sends them into the next round full of belief.
