Outstanding performance

Vélez looked the sharper side in a fractious opening half, converting a fast-break opportunity through Florián Monzón inside 11 minutes before surviving an almost immediate equaliser from Julián Palacios. Monzón then made it 2-1 from the spot in added time after a VAR review, and Vélez carried that advantage into the break with their superior possession — 58 percent across the game — and passing structure through the midfield. But Unión Santa Fe refused to fold. Rodrigo Aliendro and Braian Romero arrived from the bench shortly after the hour, and within minutes substitute Agustín Colazo planted a close-range header past the Vélez keeper from Lautaro Vargas's cross to level at 2-2. Despite Vélez creating four big chances to Unión's three, both sides squandered two apiece, and the final stages descended into niggly fouling — Lucas Robertone collecting a second yellow late on to leave Vélez down to ten men in the closing minutes. The point keeps the title race subplot alive, as both sides remain well within reach of the top of zona 8, but Vélez will feel this was two points dropped from a position of strength.
