Pivotal“Ezequiel Herrera pulled one back for San Lorenzo, giving the home crowd renewed hope and setting up a tense final quarter as Independiente retreated to protect their lead.”
Pivotal“Alexis Cuello was shown a second yellow card for simulation, reducing San Lorenzo to ten men in stoppage time and extinguishing any final hope of an equaliser in a match that had already booked several other players for dissent and off-the-ball incidents.”
San Lorenzo
Independiente
Outstanding performance
Independiente•MidfielderIndependiente arrived at the Nuevo Gasómetro and executed a ruthless smash-and-grab, taking an early lead through Matías Abaldo in the 16th minute before Maximiliano Gutiérrez buried a second early in the second half to leave San Lorenzo chasing shadows. The home side dominated every statistical category — 58% possession, 25 shots, four big chances created against two — yet their profligacy in front of goal proved fatal, missing three of four big chances while Independiente wasted none of theirs. San Lorenzo managed a late pull-back through Ezequiel Herrera on 72 minutes to set up a nervy finish, but Independiente's defensive resolve held. The closing minutes descended into ill-tempered chaos, with Alexis Cuello seeing red for simulation after already being booked, and a flurry of yellow cards in stoppage time underscoring the frustration of a San Lorenzo side that had all the ball and none of the reward.
